Nigerians planning trips to Saudi Arabia have been urged to check their flight status and travel arrangements as fresh security warnings raise concerns about airport operations and possible flight disruptions across the Kingdom.

The warning follows a series of reported missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The United States Mission in Saudi Arabia has cautioned travellers about the possibility of further attacks, airspace closures and flight cancellations.

The development is important for Nigerian passengers travelling for business, family visits, religious purposes and other international journeys, particularly those whose itineraries involve connections through the Gulf.

US Issues Fresh Airport Security Warning

The US Mission in Saudi Arabia has warned American citizens to exercise extreme caution when using airports in the country following the reported attacks.

In a security alert dated October 13, the mission said US government employees must obtain special authorisation before using airports in Saudi Arabia.

The advisory also warned of possible further attacks, flight cancellations and airspace restrictions. It advised passengers to confirm their departure details directly with their airlines and the relevant airports before travelling.

Although the advisory is directed at US citizens and government personnel, the underlying flight disruptions may also affect travellers of other nationalities, including Nigerians.

Riyadh Airport Remains Closed as Airlines Adjust Schedules

King Khalid International Airport, one of Saudi Arabia’s major aviation hubs, remains subject to a suspension of operations until October 17 under the latest published notice.

The closure followed repeated reported attacks that raised concerns about passenger safety and the operational readiness of airport facilities.

Meanwhile, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam have remained operational, although some services have experienced delays and cancellations, according to the US security advisory.

This means travellers should not assume that every Saudi airport is closed. The status of individual routes depends on the airport, airline and prevailing security restrictions. (Gulf News)

What Nigerian Travellers Need to Know

For Nigerians with upcoming bookings to Saudi Arabia, the immediate priority is to confirm whether their flights will operate as scheduled.

Travellers should take the following steps before leaving for the airport:

1. Confirm your flight directly with the airline. Check the airline’s official website, mobile application or customer service channel for the latest status. A confirmed booking does not necessarily mean a flight will operate during a security disruption.

2. Contact your travel agent. Passengers who booked through a Nigerian travel agency should request an update on their itinerary and ask about available rebooking or refund options if their flight is cancelled.

3. Review connecting flights. Travellers connecting through Riyadh or other affected airports should confirm that their onward services remain valid. Passengers using separate tickets may need to contact more than one airline.

4. Check alternative routes carefully. If an airline offers rerouting through another airport or country, confirm the new itinerary, transit visa requirements, baggage arrangements and any additional charges before accepting it.

5. Keep travel documents and airline messages accessible. Ensure that your passport, visa, booking confirmation and relevant airline notifications are available throughout the journey.

Passengers should avoid making separate, non-refundable travel arrangements until the operating airline or travel agent confirms the proposed alternative.

What About Umrah and Religious Travel?

The disruption may affect Nigerians travelling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and other religious visits, depending on their departure dates, airlines and routes.

Pilgrims should contact their tour operators and airlines to confirm whether their flights, accommodation arrangements or connecting services have changed.

Where a flight is cancelled, travellers should ask the responsible airline or tour operator to explain the available options before paying for another ticket.

Passengers should also be cautious about unofficial social media messages promising guaranteed alternative flights or urgent rebooking services. Use recognised travel providers and official airline communication channels.

Are Other Gulf Airports Operating?

The US advisory reported that airports in neighbouring countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Jordan, remained operational at the time of its publication.

However, operational status can change, and an airport remaining open does not guarantee that every route will operate normally.

Nigerian travellers considering a connection through another Gulf country should verify the status of both their departure and connecting flights. They should also confirm entry and transit requirements before changing their itinerary.

Ground transport within Saudi Arabia may be an alternative for some journeys, but passengers should confirm availability, schedules and security conditions directly with transport providers before making plans.

Travellers Warned Against Sharing Sensitive Security Images

The US Mission also highlighted a warning from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior concerning the filming or sharing of information about missile and drone interceptions and their impact sites.

The advisory said such activity could expose individuals to legal consequences. It also noted that visitors and residents are subject to Saudi laws.

Nigerians living in or visiting the Kingdom should follow official instructions, avoid restricted areas and refrain from filming sensitive security operations or sites.

When Will Riyadh Airport Reopen?

The latest published notice extends the suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport until October 17, 2026.

However, October 17 is the stated end of the current suspension, not a guaranteed reopening date. Authorities may revise the schedule depending on security assessments and operational readiness.

Airlines may also maintain cancellations or adjust their services after an airport reopens while they review safety conditions and restore their schedules.

Travellers should therefore wait for confirmation from their airline and the relevant airport before making firm plans.

What This Means for Nigeria’s Travel Industry

The situation highlights the importance of timely communication between airlines, travel agencies and passengers during international disruptions.

Nigerian travel agencies handling bookings to Saudi Arabia should monitor airline advisories, promptly inform affected customers and explain the options available under the relevant booking conditions.

For passengers, the safest approach is to verify every leg of the journey, retain booking records and avoid relying on unconfirmed reopening announcements.

As security conditions continue to evolve, Nigerians travelling to or through Saudi Arabia should prioritise official updates over assumptions or unverified social media reports.
