Portugal Suspend Cristiano Ronaldo Provisionally: What It Means for His Future

Cristiano Ronaldo faces disciplinary proceedings in Portugal after leaving the national team camp following a dispute over his playing time.

Portugal have provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo as the country’s football federation begins urgent disciplinary proceedings over his controversial departure from the national team camp. The decision adds a fresh twist to the dispute involving the veteran forward and head coach Jorge Jesus, with Ronaldo’s eventual punishment still to be determined.

Why Portugal Suspended Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) opened disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo following his departure from the national team’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark.

The 41-year-old forward reportedly became frustrated after remaining an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway on September 27. He subsequently left the camp after learning that he would not start the Denmark match.

The disagreement centred on an alleged understanding between Ronaldo and Jesus about his involvement in the two matches. Ronaldo claimed the coach had promised him playing time against Norway but failed to honour that agreement after asking him to warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch.

Jesus, however, previously denied that there had been a binding agreement over Ronaldo’s playing time.

Portuguese FA Opens Urgent Disciplinary Case

In its latest action, the FPF confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated and that the matter would be treated as urgent.

The federation also imposed a non-automatic provisional suspension, moving the case into a formal disciplinary investigation. The final decision rests with the relevant disciplinary authorities, which must determine whether Ronaldo breached the federation’s regulations and what punishment, if any, should follow.

According to reports on Portugal’s disciplinary rules, leaving a national-team activity without valid justification can attract a suspension ranging from one to six months, alongside a possible financial penalty.

However, the one-to-six-month range is a potential punishment under the reported rules, not a confirmed sentence against Ronaldo. The final outcome remains pending.

Ronaldo Apologises and Accepts Possible Punishment

Ronaldo has since acknowledged that his decision to leave the national team camp could have consequences.

The Portugal captain apologised for leaving his teammates and for failing to acknowledge supporters following the match against Norway. He also maintained that he believed the situation arose because the coach had gone back on their understanding regarding his role in the team.

Despite the dispute, Ronaldo said he remained available to represent Portugal after serving any punishment imposed by the federation.

His response is significant because it suggests that, despite the public disagreement, the forward has not announced his retirement from international football.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo Return to Portugal?

Ronaldo’s future with the national team remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the case.

The FPF president, Pedro Proença, has indicated that there is a desire among the federation, coaching staff, captain and players to see Ronaldo return once the matter is resolved. However, Proença stressed that the independent disciplinary body must handle the proceedings.

For now, Ronaldo’s international future depends on the outcome of the investigation and any sanction imposed. A provisional suspension should not be mistaken for a final ruling or a permanent exclusion from the national team.

What Happens Next?

The disciplinary investigation will determine the consequences of Ronaldo’s departure and whether a further suspension or fine is warranted.

Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on November 14 before travelling to play Wales on November 17 in their final Nations League group fixtures. Whether Ronaldo will be available for those matches will depend on the disciplinary outcome and the applicable suspension.

For a player who has captained Portugal and established himself as the country’s record men’s international goalscorer and appearance-maker, the episode represents a significant test of his relationship with the national team.

The coming decision will also send a message about discipline and accountability within the squad, regardless of a player’s status or achievements.

For now, Ronaldo remains provisionally suspended, the investigation is ongoing, and no final punishment has been confirmed.
