Man City Shocked by Brighton: Haaland’s Scoring Run Ends — What Next?

Erling Haaland looks frustrated during Manchester City's 1–0 Premier League defeat to Brighton.
Manchester City suffered another league defeat as Brighton secured a historic 1–0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City suffered a painful 1–0 defeat to Brighton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, October 31, 2026. The result marked City’s second consecutive Premier League loss and ended Erling Haaland’s seven-game scoring streak in the competition.

Yasin Ayari scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute. The Brighton midfielder took advantage of a defensive mistake involving Matheus Nunes to put the visitors ahead.

City tried to respond but struggled to turn their possession and attacking pressure into goals.

Brighton Hold Firm as City Waste Chances

Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was one of the biggest reasons the visitors left Manchester with all three points.

The Dutch goalkeeper made seven saves as City pushed for an equaliser. Iliman Ndiaye came close, while Nunes also forced a good stop after the break.

City finished with 21 shots, six of them on target. However, they could not find a way past Brighton’s organised defence.

Nico O’Reilly missed a late opportunity when his header went wide, while Brighton also had chances to extend their lead.

The victory was historic for the Seagulls. It was their first-ever win away to Manchester City, ending a long wait for success at the Etihad.

Haaland’s Scoring Run Comes to an End

Another major talking point was Haaland’s failure to score.

The Norwegian striker had scored in seven consecutive Premier League matches before Saturday’s encounter. Brighton’s defenders, however, managed to limit his opportunities.

His quiet afternoon will attract attention, particularly as City look to recover from their recent setbacks.

Still, one goalless match does not necessarily signal a problem with Haaland’s form. City’s bigger concern is the team’s inability to convert chances into goals.

What the Defeat Means for the Premier League Title Race

Despite the loss, Manchester City remain top of the Premier League table with 21 points from nine matches.

Arsenal also have 21 points but have played one game fewer. The Gunners could move above City if they avoid defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

Brighton, meanwhile, have moved to third place with 19 points. Their impressive start to the campaign has made them genuine contenders for a place in next season’s Champions League.

City’s two successive league defeats have therefore opened the door for their rivals. However, the title race is still at an early stage, and there is plenty of time for the defending contenders to recover.

What Next for Manchester City?

City cannot afford to dwell on the defeat for too long.

Enzo Maresca’s side will turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, where they are scheduled to face RB Leipzig in Germany on Wednesday, November 4.

They will then return to Premier League action against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, November 7.

The immediate task is clear: improve their finishing, tighten up defensively and restore confidence.

For Brighton, the victory is another major statement. Fabian Hürzeler’s team have shown that they can compete with the league’s biggest clubs.

The big question now is whether Manchester City can bounce back quickly or whether their recent struggles will give Arsenal and other title rivals a bigger opportunity.
