Did you know that football’s yellow and red cards were inspired by traffic lights?
The idea came from English referee Ken Aston after confusion during the 1966 World Cup match between England and Argentina.
A language barrier made it difficult for players to understand the referee’s decisions. Aston later saw traffic lights and came up with a simple solution.
Yellow means caution. Red means stop.
The cards were first used at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Today, they help referees communicate disciplinary decisions clearly across the world.
