Did you know that Benin City, in Edo State, Nigeria, is famous worldwide for its ancient bronze and brass artworks?
These remarkable artworks, popularly known as the Benin Bronzes, were created by skilled artisans of the historic Kingdom of Benin. They include royal plaques, commemorative heads and ceremonial objects that tell stories about the kingdom’s rulers, culture and traditions.
Here’s what makes them special: Many were produced using a technique called lost-wax casting, which allows artists to create incredibly detailed metal sculptures.
But there is a sad chapter in their history. In 1897, British forces looted thousands of objects from Benin City. Many were taken abroad, sparking ongoing discussions about returning Nigeria’s stolen cultural heritage.
Today, artisans in Benin City continue to practise this centuries-old craft, keeping an important part of Nigeria’s artistic heritage alive.
Did you know? Despite their popular name, many Benin Bronzes are actually made from brass and other copper alloys.
