NYSC Abduction in Imo: 20 NYSC Members Regain Freedom After 7-Day Kidnapping – Full Details

Rescued prospective NYSC members after seven days in captivity in Imo State
Twenty prospective NYSC members have regained freedom after seven days in captivity in Imo State.

Twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Imo State have regained their freedom after seven days in captivity, bringing relief to their families and ending a tense search-and-rescue operation.

The victims were rescued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, after security agencies sustained operations to locate them following their abduction along the Owerri-Onitsha Road.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the 20 prospective corps members were rescued at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State.

They have since been taken for medical assessment and necessary care.

How the Abduction Happened

The prospective corps members were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when gunmen attacked two buses near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State on October 1.

The attack happened early in the morning as the passengers travelled through the state.

Initial reports indicated that some victims were rescued shortly after the attack, but other prospective corps members remained in captivity.

Security agencies then launched a wider operation to locate the remaining victims and track the abductors.

Security Agencies Intensify Search

The rescue operation involved multiple security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and military.

The Imo State Police Command had earlier said its operatives used drone surveillance to identify the suspected kidnappers’ hideout.

However, security personnel reportedly faced difficulties accessing the location after intelligence indicated that the area had been booby-trapped with improvised explosive devices.

Additional operational equipment, including armoured personnel carriers and bulldozers, was subsequently deployed as the search continued.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had also deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Nadada, alongside two commissioners of police, to strengthen the rescue effort.

Where the Victims Were Rescued

The Nigeria Police Force said the 20 prospective corps members were rescued at Amakohia Ubi Village on October 7 following sustained search-and-rescue operations.

Another civilian hostage was also reported to have regained freedom.

The rescued victims were taken to a DSS facility in Owerri for medical assessment.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, visited the facility and addressed the rescued corps members.

He was accompanied by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the state Director of the DSS and the Commander of 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze.

Was Ransom Paid?

This remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.

During the period of captivity, reports emerged that the abductors demanded ₦50 million for each victim, which would have amounted to ₦1 billion for 20 people.

Later reports said the demand was reduced to ₦5 million per person, or ₦100 million in total.

However, there is no official confirmation that ransom was paid to secure the victims’ release.

Premium Times reported that it remained unclear whether any ransom was paid as of Wednesday evening.

For now, the circumstances surrounding the release remain under investigation.

Oyo and Imo Governments Worked Together

The abduction attracted attention in both Oyo and Imo states because the victims began their journey from Ibadan before they were attacked in Imo.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma commended the security agencies for the operation and also praised the cooperation between the Oyo and Imo governments.

He said the authorities deliberately kept details of the operation from the public because of the need to protect the lives of the captives and avoid compromising the rescue effort.

The development has brought relief to the families who spent a week waiting for news about their loved ones.

What Happens Next?

Although the victims are now free, the security operation is not over.

The Nigeria Police Force said efforts are continuing to identify and arrest those responsible for the abduction.

The victims are also receiving medical attention following their release.

The police have not released details about the condition of each victim or disclosed whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The case also raises wider concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling to NYSC orientation camps, particularly on long-distance routes through areas affected by kidnapping.

For the families involved, however, the immediate priority is clear: their loved ones are finally back.
