At least six people were killed when gunmen attacked Gero community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, the police have confirmed.

The attack occurred on the night of Monday, October 26, into the early hours of Tuesday, October 27, 2026. It has renewed concerns about the safety of communities around Jos metropolis.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the death toll in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, on Tuesday.

Here is what we know about the attack, the police response and the search for the perpetrators.

What happened in Gero?

According to community accounts reported by Nigerian media, the gunmen stormed Gero at night and opened fire on residents.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, told Channels Television that the attackers arrived at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday.

A community member, Bot Silas, gave a slightly different account to Punch, saying the gunmen arrived at about 10:20 p.m.

The attackers reportedly shot at people at relaxation spots and nearby shops. Some victims were said to have been attacked at their shops and a local restaurant.

The incident caused panic as residents fled to safety.

How many people were killed?

The police confirmed that six people were killed in the attack.

However, the Berom Youth Moulders Association and some early media reports initially put the death toll at seven.

The difference arose because community representatives reported seven deaths before the police issued their official figure.

The police also confirmed that one injured victim was taken to hospital for treatment. The bodies of those killed were evacuated to a morgue.

For now, six remains the casualty figure confirmed by the police.

What have the police done?

The Plateau State Police Command said it deployed mobile police officers and tactical operatives to the community after receiving information about the attack.

The team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, worked alongside military personnel and operatives of Operation Rainbow.

According to the police, the joint security team dislodged the attackers, who fled into surrounding hillside forest.

Security operatives subsequently began bush-combing, cordon-and-search, and clearance operations to locate the fleeing suspects.

The police also reported recovering motorcycles and other items allegedly abandoned by the attackers.

The command said investigations had been intensified to identify and arrest those responsible. However, the reports reviewed for this story did not confirm any arrests directly linked to the Gero attack.

What has Governor Mutfwang said?

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the killings and vowed that the perpetrators would be tracked down.

Speaking on Tuesday during the swearing-in of special advisers at the New Government House in Jos, Mutfwang described the attack as disturbing because it occurred close to the state capital.

The governor said investigators had recovered evidence from the scene and were following leads that could help identify the attackers.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with timely information about suspicious movements.

Mutfwang acknowledged that security personnel could not be everywhere at once, stressing the importance of cooperation between communities and security agencies.

Why the attack matters

The Gero killings have raised fresh concerns about security in communities around Jos.

Residents and community representatives have called for stronger surveillance, increased security presence and sustained operations to prevent further attacks.

The incident also highlights the importance of rapid information-sharing between residents and security agencies, particularly when suspicious movements are reported.

However, the identity and motive of the attackers had not been conclusively established in the reports reviewed for this article. It would therefore be premature to attribute responsibility to any particular group.

What remains unknown?

Several questions remain unanswered:

  • Who carried out the attack? The attackers were described as unidentified gunmen.
  • Have suspects been arrested? No arrest directly linked to the Gero attack was confirmed in the reports reviewed.
  • What was the motive? Authorities had not publicly established the motive.
  • Will the security operation lead to arrests? The police said the manhunt and investigation were continuing.

Further updates from the police and other credible authorities will be needed to clarify these points.
