The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) and its director, Zavyalov Dmitry, over alleged money laundering-related offences involving transactions totalling ₦582.43 million.
The defendants appeared before Justice O. A. Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, facing a six-count amended charge bordering on alleged failure to report specified financial transfers to the authorities.
Dmitry was described in the charge as being at large, while ALSCON’s Acting Managing Director, Ime Monday Inyang, entered a not-guilty plea on behalf of the company.
The case is marked FHC/ABJ/CR/644/2025.
EFCC Details Alleged ₦582.43m Transactions
According to the EFCC’s amended charge, ALSCON and its director allegedly failed to report certain single transfers from the company’s account to the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering (SCUML), as required under Section 11(1)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The transfers listed in the charge include payments to UDATSON Nigeria, Urico Global Services and an individual identified as Christopher Azogu between March and July 2024.
The alleged transactions are as follows:
- March 2024: ₦147,515,050 paid to UDATSON Nigeria.
- April 2024: ₦156,026,860 paid to UDATSON Nigeria.
- May 2024: ₦121,425,200 paid to UDATSON Nigeria.
- July 2024: ₦127,338,190 paid to UDATSON Nigeria.
- April 2024: ₦15,124,950 paid to Urico Global Services.
- June 2024: ₦15 million paid to Christopher Azogu.
The commission alleges that the company, classified in the charge as a Designated Non-Financial Business and Profession (DNFBP), failed to submit the required written reports on the specified transfers.
The allegations relate to reporting obligations under the money laundering law. The arraignment does not, by itself, establish that the defendants committed the offences.
ALSCON Pleads Not Guilty
EFCC lead counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, told the court that the alleged offences are punishable under Sections 11(3), 19(2)(b) and 22 of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
When the amended charges were read, Inyang pleaded not guilty to all six counts on behalf of ALSCON.
The company’s lawyer also asked the court to quash the charges, maintaining that the company was innocent of the allegations.
Following the plea, Justice Egwuatu adjourned the case to January 27, 2027, for the commencement of trial.
What Happens Next?
The next stage of the proceedings will allow the prosecution to begin presenting its case, subject to the court’s directions. The defendants will have the opportunity to challenge the allegations through the judicial process.
The case will test the allegations surrounding ALSCON’s reporting obligations under Nigeria’s money laundering regulations. No finding of guilt has been established by the arraignment, and the matter remains before the court.
WeGoTalk Naija Blog will continue to follow developments in the case.
