Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola disease case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) intensifies vigilance across airport operations to support efforts to prevent further transmission.

The Federal Government announced the case on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following laboratory confirmation. Health authorities have identified 44 close contacts and commenced contact tracing.

The patient, a woman who recently travelled to Nigeria through Uganda, is in isolation and receiving medical care at a private hospital in Abuja, according to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The World Health Organization (WHO) identified the infection as Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease. Investigations are ongoing to establish the likely source of infection and determine whether other people may have been exposed.

FG Activates Ebola Containment Measures

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, said the Federal Government was working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the FCT Health Services Secretariat and other relevant authorities to contain the infection.

Public health teams have begun tracing people who may have had contact with the patient. These include healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel-related contacts.

The hospital where the woman received treatment is also receiving support to strengthen infection prevention and control measures.

The government has directed public and private healthcare facilities nationwide to remain on high alert.

Healthcare workers have been urged to promptly identify and isolate suspected cases, follow strict infection prevention procedures and immediately report suspected infections to public health authorities.

The response is aimed at detecting possible additional cases early and preventing further transmission.

FAAN Heightens Vigilance at Nigerian Airports

Following the confirmation, FAAN said it was maintaining heightened vigilance across airport operations.

The authority is working with the NCDC, Port Health Services, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant agencies to support the national response.

In a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN said the early identification of the case and commencement of contact tracing highlighted the importance of surveillance and cooperation among public health agencies.

The authority said it would continue coordinating with health officials and implement further measures in line with their guidance to protect passengers, airport personnel and the wider public.

FAAN also urged passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with health officials.

It advised Nigerians to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports about the case.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to supporting public health protection while maintaining safe airport operations.

What Nigerians Should Know About Ebola

Ebola is a serious viral disease that can cause severe illness. According to the World Health Organization, transmission generally occurs through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is showing symptoms, or through contaminated materials.

The government has advised Nigerians to maintain good hand hygiene and avoid contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of anyone suspected of having the disease.

People who believe they may have been exposed should contact public health authorities for guidance. Anyone who develops symptoms after a possible exposure should seek medical advice promptly and contact health officials before visiting a healthcare facility.

Healthcare workers have a particularly important role in identifying suspected cases, following infection prevention protocols and reporting cases without delay.

The public should avoid relying on rumours or unverified claims about the patient, the suspected source of infection or the possibility of further cases.

Is There a Wider Ebola Outbreak in Nigeria?

As of the government’s October 20 announcement, one case had been confirmed in Abuja, with 44 close contacts identified for tracing.

The confirmation does not, by itself, establish that there is widespread community transmission in Nigeria. Health authorities are investigating the case and monitoring people who may have been exposed.

The incident comes amid a wider regional outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo among the countries affected. WHO has called for strengthened surveillance and coordinated action as the outbreak develops.

Nigeria has previous experience responding to Ebola. In 2014, the country contained an outbreak after an infected traveller arrived from Liberia, using case identification, isolation and contact tracing.

The current response will depend on how quickly authorities identify potential exposures, monitor contacts and detect any additional infections.

Government Urges Calm as Surveillance Continues

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to remain calm while following official public health guidance.

Health authorities are continuing contact tracing, surveillance and infection prevention efforts, while FAAN works with relevant agencies to support airport safety.

For now, the immediate priorities are to monitor identified contacts, investigate the source of the infection and prevent further transmission.

WeGoTalk will continue to follow verified updates from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, NCDC, FAAN and the World Health Organization as more information becomes available.
