Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history by reaching their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.
The Nigerian girls produced a dominant second-half performance to overcome their South American opponents at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé.
The victory sends Nigeria into the final, where they will face Japan on Saturday, November 7, for the tournament’s title.
Flamingos Break Brazil’s Resistance
The first half ended goalless despite Nigeria creating several opportunities.
However, the Flamingos returned from the break with greater attacking intensity.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute, finishing a pass from Oluwakemi Adegubyi to give Nigeria the breakthrough.
Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Awawu Bashiru converted a pass from Queen Joseph.
Bashiru struck again in the 80th minute, completing her brace and putting the Flamingos firmly in control.
Brazil pulled one goal back in the 89th minute through Greise Kelly, who headed home a cross from Yasmin Queiroz.
But the late consolation was not enough to stop Nigeria from securing a historic victory.
Nigeria Set Up Final Against Japan
The result marks a major achievement for Nigeria’s women’s youth football team.
The Flamingos had reached the semi-finals after defeating China 2-1 in the quarter-finals, with Helena scoring both goals.
Their victory over Brazil now gives Nigeria a chance to win the U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
Japan will provide the opposition in Saturday’s final, while Brazil will face North Korea in the third-place match.
Both games are scheduled to take place in Morocco.
What This Means
Nigeria’s victory over Brazil is more than a place in the final.
It represents the Flamingos’ best-ever performance at the tournament and gives the country a chance to claim a historic global title.
The team will now turn its attention to Japan, with the final offering an opportunity to complete an impressive campaign with the trophy.
The Flamingos have already made history. Now, they are one win away from becoming world champions.
