Nigerian international Alex Iwobi scored the decisive goal as Fulham defeated Hull City 1–0 at Craven Cottage on Saturday, October 17, ending their frustrating wait for a Premier League victory and easing the pressure on manager Álvaro Arbeloa.

Fulham finally had something to celebrate after a difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

The Cottagers secured a crucial 1–0 victory over Hull City, thanks to Iwobi’s first-half strike. The result lifted Fulham out of the relegation zone and gave Arbeloa his first league win since taking charge.

However, the hosts had to endure a nervy finish after Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in stoppage time.

Iwobi delivers when Fulham need him most

Fulham entered the match desperate for three points after six league games without a victory under Arbeloa.

The home side started brightly and dominated possession, putting Hull under pressure from the opening minutes. Iwobi came close to opening the scoring early on, but his effort failed to find the target.

The breakthrough arrived in the 33rd minute.

Hull’s Brooke Norton-Cuffy failed to clear the ball effectively inside his own penalty area. Sander Berge recovered possession and calmly laid it off for Iwobi, who drove a low shot towards goal.

Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis appeared to have the effort under control, but the ball slipped through his hands and into the net.

It was a costly mistake for the visitors and a priceless moment for Fulham.

Iwobi’s goal gave the home crowd the lift they had been waiting for and rewarded Fulham for their positive start.

Fulham dominate but fail to kill off the contest

Fulham continued to create opportunities after the restart but could not find the second goal that would have settled their nerves.

Josh King came close to extending the advantage, only for Tzolakis to make an important save.

Iwobi also threatened again. The Nigerian midfielder found space inside the penalty area, but the Hull goalkeeper made another save to keep his side in the contest.

The Fulham pressure continued, and the hosts came agonisingly close to doubling their lead in the 74th minute.

Iwobi delivered an excellent cross into the box, which Gonzalo García met with a header. The effort beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar.

It was a major let-off for Hull, who struggled to create consistent attacking opportunities of their own.

Fulham’s inability to score a second goal meant the closing stages remained tense, despite their overall dominance.

Sessegnon red card creates late drama

Just when Fulham appeared close to securing a comfortable victory, the contest took another turn in stoppage time.

Substitute Ryan Sessegnon was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Hull substitute Robinio Vaz, leaving Fulham with ten men for the final moments.

The dismissal raised the tension inside Craven Cottage, with the home side forced to protect their narrow advantage.

Hull attempted to take advantage of the extra space, but Mohamed Belloumi sent a late free-kick over the crossbar.

Fulham survived the scare and held on for a victory that could prove important in their fight to climb the table.

Although the late dismissal was an unwanted setback, the final whistle brought relief for the players, coaching staff and supporters.

First league win eases pressure on Arbeloa

The result was especially significant for Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa, whose position had come under scrutiny following the team’s disappointing start.

Before the match, Fulham had endured four defeats and two draws in their opening six league fixtures. Their failure to turn promising performances into victories had increased the pressure on the Spanish coach.

Iwobi’s goal finally delivered the breakthrough.

The victory moved Fulham out of the relegation zone and gave Arbeloa valuable breathing space ahead of the next round of fixtures.

However, the manager will know that there is still work to do. Fulham created enough chances to win by a more comfortable margin, but their wastefulness in front of goal nearly allowed Hull to escape with a point.

Improving their finishing and managing late-game pressure will be important if Fulham are to build on this result.

What Iwobi’s performance means for Nigerian football

Iwobi’s decisive contribution will also attract attention from Nigerian football supporters.

The midfielder has become an important figure for Fulham, offering technical quality, movement and creativity in the middle of the pitch.

His goal against Hull demonstrated his ability to make a difference in a high-pressure situation. With Fulham struggling for results, the importance of his contribution went beyond the three points.

For Nigeria, Iwobi’s continued involvement in competitive Premier League football remains encouraging as the Super Eagles look ahead to their upcoming international commitments.

The goal also reinforces his value as a player capable of contributing both in possession and in decisive attacking moments.

Hull City miss opportunity as Fulham escape the bottom three

Hull City will be disappointed with their performance at Craven Cottage.

The visitors struggled to impose themselves for long periods and failed to create enough clear chances to seriously test Fulham’s defence.

Their defensive mistake for Iwobi’s goal proved costly, while Tzolakis’ error allowed the hosts to take the lead.

Although Hull improved in spells, they were unable to turn their late numerical advantage into an equaliser.

The defeat will leave manager Sergej Jakirovic with questions to answer, particularly about his side’s attacking approach and their inability to take advantage of Fulham’s failure to extend the lead.

What’s next for Fulham?

Fulham will hope Saturday’s victory marks the beginning of a recovery rather than a temporary reprieve.

Their next scheduled Premier League fixture is an away match against Coventry City on October 24. Another positive result would help build momentum and strengthen their position outside the relegation zone.

Hull, meanwhile, must regroup and improve their attacking output before their next fixture.

For now, Fulham can celebrate a much-needed victory, Arbeloa can breathe a little easier, and Iwobi can take credit for delivering the decisive moment.

One goal was enough. For Fulham, it could be the result that finally gets their season moving.
