Security operatives have arrested five suspected members of a criminal gang allegedly involved in the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State, in a development that could advance efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
The arrests followed intelligence-led operations conducted between October 10 and 14 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The joint operation involved personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), the military, the Nigeria Police Force and other security operatives.
Three other suspects reportedly escaped during the operations with gunshot injuries, prompting security agencies to continue searching for the fleeing individuals.
The arrests were reported on October 16, as security agencies intensified efforts to track down those allegedly connected to the incident.
How the 20 Prospective Corps Members Were Abducted
The 20 prospective corps members were abducted on October 1, 2026, while travelling along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway in Imo State.
The victims were reportedly on their way from Ibadan, Oyo State, to their assigned NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when armed men attacked two buses conveying the travellers near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
The incident raised renewed concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling to begin their national service, particularly on highways vulnerable to criminal attacks.
Abducted NYSC Members Rescued After Six Days
The victims were rescued on October 7 during a joint security operation at Amakohia-Ubi Village in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
Security operatives had reportedly used intelligence gathering and drone surveillance during efforts to locate the kidnappers’ camp.
Earlier accounts indicated that the suspected camp was difficult to approach because of concerns about improvised explosive devices allegedly planted in the area.
Following their rescue, the victims were taken for medical attention and necessary checks.
Their release brought relief to their families and the wider public, while security agencies continued efforts to identify and apprehend the people allegedly responsible for the abduction.
Three Suspects Still Being Hunted
Although five suspects have been arrested, three others reportedly escaped during the intelligence-led operations with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
Security operatives are continuing their manhunt for the fleeing suspects as investigations proceed.
The arrests are a significant development in the case, but the suspects’ alleged involvement must still be established through the appropriate legal process.
Further details about the identities of the arrested suspects, possible charges and the next stage of the investigation have not been fully disclosed in the reports available.
What the Arrests Mean for Road Safety and NYSC Members
The incident has once again drawn attention to the security risks faced by travellers on major roads and by graduates travelling to orientation camps.
For prospective corps members and their families, the case highlights the importance of following official NYSC travel guidance and promptly reporting suspicious activity or security threats during journeys.
The latest arrests may help investigators piece together how the abduction was carried out and whether additional people were involved.
However, the case remains a reminder that rescuing victims is only one part of the response. Identifying all those responsible, bringing suspects before the courts and preventing similar incidents will be crucial.
WeGoTalk.com.ng will continue to follow the investigation and report verified updates on the suspects, the ongoing manhunt and any official statements from security agencies.
