IBADAN, Nigeria — Segun Ogunwuyi has resigned as Chief of Staff to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, bringing an end to more than five years in the influential position and adding a fresh development to the state’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Ogunwuyi communicated his resignation in a letter dated Monday, October 12, 2026, stating that his departure took immediate effect. He did not disclose a specific reason for his decision. Punch and Channels Television reported the development.

Ogunwuyi Thanks Makinde for the Opportunity to Serve

In his resignation letter addressed to Makinde, Ogunwuyi described his time in government as an honour and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve Oyo State.

He said he was proud of the administration’s efforts to advance the state’s growth and development, adding that he remained confident in Oyo State’s continued progress.

Ogunwuyi also reaffirmed his regard for the governor and his loyalty to Oyo State and Nigeria.

Although his letter offered a note of gratitude, it did not explain the circumstances behind his departure or indicate whether he planned to take up another political role.

Makinde Appoints Akinwole as Successor

Makinde moved quickly to fill the vacancy, appointing Bashorun Akinwole Akinwole, popularly known as Wolekanle, as the new Chief of Staff.

The appointment was announced on Monday and took immediate effect. Akinwole previously served as chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission and is described as a grassroots politician.

The governor also appointed Aderonke Adedayo, his Special Adviser on General Intervention and Donor Agencies, as Director-General of the state’s Due Process Office. She will retain her existing advisory responsibilities alongside the new position.

The appointments were conveyed through letters signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Musibau Babatunde, according to Premium Times.

What Is Behind the Resignation?

Ogunwuyi’s exit comes amid reports of other political appointees leaving Makinde’s administration in recent months, prompting questions about the political calculations and internal alignments taking shape in Oyo State.

The resignation has also drawn attention because of growing political discussions surrounding the choice of a successor to Makinde, whose tenure is approaching its final phase.

A report by TheCable suggested that Ogunwuyi’s departure might be connected to possible political realignments, including speculation about an alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and disagreements over succession considerations. However, these explanations have not been publicly confirmed by Ogunwuyi, and his resignation letter did not mention a dispute with the governor.

The circumstances surrounding his exit therefore remain unclear. Any claim that he resigned because of a disagreement over the 2027 succession should be treated as speculation unless supported by a direct statement or further verifiable evidence.

Ogunwuyi’s Political Background

Before becoming Makinde’s Chief of Staff in July 2021, Ogunwuyi served as Director-General of the Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency.

He also has legislative experience, having served in the Oyo State House of Assembly and later in the House of Representatives, where he represented Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Oriire Federal Constituency.

His position as Chief of Staff placed him close to the governor and at the centre of administrative coordination within the state government.

What His Exit Means for Oyo Politics

The resignation and immediate appointment of a successor ensure that the governor’s office has a new administrative head without a prolonged vacancy. Politically, however, Ogunwuyi’s next move could attract attention as parties and political figures position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, there is no confirmed public explanation for his resignation and no verified announcement in his resignation letter about his next political destination.

As political activity gathers pace in Oyo State, Ogunwuyi’s departure is another development to watch, but its wider implications will become clearer only when the parties involved provide further details.

WeGoTalk will continue to follow developments surrounding the changes in Makinde’s administration and the evolving contest ahead of the 2027 Oyo governorship election.
