SON, China’s CNIS Deepen Standards Cooperation — What It Means for Energy Efficiency in Nigeria

SON and China CNIS officials during standards cooperation meeting in Abuja

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS) are exploring deeper technical cooperation in standardisation, energy efficiency and sustainable development.

The two institutions held a bilateral meeting at the SON Headquarters in Abuja, with participants joining both physically and virtually.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation through the China-Africa Centre for Standardization Cooperation and Research and the development of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS).

Why the SON-CNIS Meeting Matters

Standards play an important role in determining the quality, safety and efficiency of products and services in the market.

For Nigeria, stronger cooperation with an international standards institution could support technical capacity, improve standards development and strengthen energy-efficiency practices.

The engagement also provides an opportunity for Nigerian and Chinese standards experts to exchange technical knowledge and explore areas for future collaboration.

Representing the Director General/Chief Executive of SON, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, the agency’s Chief of Staff, Mr Uchenna Okafor, welcomed the CNIS delegation.

Okafor highlighted the importance of the partnership to technical capacity building, innovation, trade and energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency Takes Centre Stage

A major focus of the meeting was Minimum Energy Performance Standards, which set minimum efficiency requirements for energy-using products.

The technical sessions examined issues around energy standards and testing, including SON’s Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme.

Participants also discussed testing protocols, compliance monitoring and market surveillance.

These areas matter because effective standards require more than setting technical requirements. Regulators and testing institutions must also monitor compliance and ensure that products meet the required standards in the marketplace.

China-Africa Standards Cooperation

The meeting also examined the China-Africa Centre for Standardization Cooperation and Research.

The initiative provides a platform for technical cooperation between China and African countries in standardisation.

For SON, participation in such cooperation could create opportunities for knowledge exchange, technical research and capacity development.

The discussions also explored how both institutions could deepen their collaboration under a proposed cooperation framework.

What SON and CNIS Agreed

At the end of the meeting, SON and CNIS reaffirmed their commitment to stronger bilateral cooperation.

The areas identified for further collaboration include:

  • Technical research.
  • Capacity building.
  • Standards development.
  • Energy-efficiency standards.
  • Alignment of relevant standards.
  • International standardisation activities.
  • Technical knowledge exchange.

Both institutions also agreed to pursue further engagements under the proposed cooperation framework.

What Happens Next?

The meeting marks another step in efforts by SON and CNIS to strengthen technical cooperation.

The next phase will focus on developing the proposed cooperation framework and identifying practical areas where both institutions can work together.

For Nigeria, the potential benefits will depend on how the technical discussions translate into stronger standards, improved testing and compliance systems, greater energy efficiency and increased technical capacity.

For now, SON and CNIS have established areas for deeper engagement, with energy efficiency and standards development remaining central to the proposed partnership.

WeGoTalk Naija will continue to follow developments around the SON-CNIS cooperation and its implications for Nigerian businesses, consumers and the wider economy.
