The Zamfara State Government has reported 38 cases of an unidentified illness in two local government areas, prompting an emergency health response.
The cases were recorded in Shinkafi and Moriki, a community in Zurmi Local Government Area, according to the state Ministry of Health.
The ministry said the cases were reported as of October 29, with most affected residents being adults in Shinkafi.
Symptoms Reported Among Patients
Affected residents reportedly presented symptoms including fever, headaches, loss of appetite, vomiting, body pains and general weakness.
The ministry said preliminary clinical assessments identified malaria, gastroenteritis and meningitis as possible causes.
However, laboratory investigations are still required to determine the actual cause of the illness.
Government Deploys Emergency Response Team
The state government has deployed a multidisciplinary emergency response team led by the Director of Public Health, Dr Yusuf Abubakar.
The team is investigating the reported cases, strengthening disease surveillance and working to prevent further spread.
Medical personnel are also assessing patients in health facilities across Shinkafi and Moriki.
The response includes the distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies. Clinical samples have also been collected for laboratory analysis in Sokoto.
Residents Urged to Seek Medical Attention
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Nafisa Maradun, has advised residents experiencing the reported symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
She also warned against self-medication and urged residents to cooperate with health officials carrying out investigations.
As investigations continue, the state has yet to establish the specific disease responsible for the reported cases.
For now, residents in the affected communities are being advised to remain alert, report symptoms early and follow guidance from health authorities.
