Black Market Guinness World Record screening at Tafawa Balewa Square Lagos
Thousands of Nigerians gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, as Black Market set a Guinness World Record with 51,000 qualifying viewers.

Nollywood has made another major mark on the global stage. The crime thriller Black Market has set a Guinness World Record after attracting 51,000 qualifying viewers to a single screening at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos.

The record-breaking screening took place on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

Guinness World Records confirmed the 51,000 figure after the screening. The figure represents viewers who stayed from the beginning of the movie until the end.

51,000 Viewers Beat Previous Record

The Black Market screening surpassed the previous record of 43,624 viewers.

A screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena in 2015 previously held that record.

Organisers set their target at 50,000 viewers. The final qualifying figure pushed the event past that target.

The achievement triggered loud celebrations at TBS. The crowd cheered when the Guinness World Records announcement came through. Fireworks also lit up the venue.

TBS Turns Into a Sea of Movie Lovers

Thousands of Nigerians arrived at TBS hours before the screening.

The gates opened around 2pm. A red-carpet session followed at about 3pm.

The main screening started later in the evening.

Long queues stretched around the venue as movie lovers arrived for the historic event. Music, food and games also formed part of the programme.

The huge turnout turned what could have been an ordinary movie premiere into a major entertainment spectacle.

Why 51,000 Counts

The event reportedly attracted more people than the final Guinness figure.

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat put total attendance at about 64,000 people.

However, Guinness World Records used a stricter measurement.

The organisation counted only viewers who remained throughout the movie. That process produced the official qualifying figure of 51,000.

That distinction matters because Guinness records rely on specific verification requirements.

So, while about 64,000 people reportedly attended the event, 51,000 viewers qualified for the record.

FilmOne Celebrates Nollywood’s Big Moment

FilmOne, the movie’s distributor, celebrated the achievement shortly after the screening.

The company described the moment as a historic achievement for Nigeria and Nollywood.

The production brought together Rixel Studios, Signet Ring Studios and FilmOne Studios, while Switch Visuals handled the event production.

Producer Nicole Ofoegbu also celebrated the milestone.

She thanked the cast, crew and everyone who supported the project.

For the filmmakers, the record represents more than a huge premiere. It shows the ability of Nigerian filmmakers to create events that attract massive audiences.

What Is “Black Market” About?

Black Market is a Nollywood crime thriller directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay.

The story follows five women who become involved in a cross-border smuggling operation during a period of fuel scarcity and economic pressure.

The situation takes a darker turn when kidnappers take the daughter of one of the women.

The movie features actors including Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini and Uzor Arukwe.

Nollywood Turns the Audience Into History

The significance of the Black Market achievement goes beyond the movie itself.

Nollywood has spent decades building a global audience for Nigerian stories. This time, the audience became part of the story.

More than 51,000 people gathered at one location to watch the same Nigerian film together.

That scale created a remarkable moment for Nigeria’s creative industry.

FilmOne captured the mood after the announcement with a simple message: Nigerians did not just watch a movie. They made history.

For the filmmakers behind Black Market, the next challenge may now come after the record.

They must convert the enormous attention into sustained interest in the film and its wider release.

For Nollywood, however, September 26, 2026, will remain a remarkable date.

Black Market did not just bring thousands of Nigerians to TBS. It turned a movie screening into a Guinness World Records moment.
