Arsenal produced a stunning comeback at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, overturning an early Chelsea lead to secure a 2–1 victory and maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.
The reigning champions fell behind after just 77 seconds, but goals from Kai Havertz and captain Martin Ødegaard turned the London derby around and handed Mikel Arteta’s side a third consecutive league victory.
The result leaves Arsenal on nine points from nine, level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, while Chelsea suffered their first defeat of the campaign and remain on six points.
Chelsea Strike First
Chelsea stunned the home crowd almost immediately when Morgan Rogers opened the scoring inside two minutes.
Following a Reece James free-kick into the Arsenal penalty area, the Gunners failed to clear their lines and Jorrel Hato’s header fell invitingly to Rogers on the edge of the box.
The £117 million summer signing needed no second invitation, producing a first-time volley that flew into the bottom corner beyond David Raya.
It was a particularly interesting goal because Arsenal had been heavily linked with Rogers before Chelsea won the race for his signature.
Arsenal Respond With Fury
Rather than panic, Arsenal responded with relentless pressure.
The hosts thought they had equalised when Riccardo Calafiori finished from close range following a chaotic free-kick situation, but the goal was ruled out after VAR determined that Ezri Konsa had been offside in the build-up.
Arsenal continued to dominate the contest, and their persistence finally paid off in the 25th minute.
Kai Havertz collected the ball on the edge of the Chelsea box, drifted inside and fired a low effort towards the near post.
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was unable to keep it out as the German forward restored parity.
The equaliser changed the momentum of the match, with Arsenal growing increasingly dangerous as Chelsea struggled to contain the champions’ intensity.
Ødegaard Completes the Comeback
Arsenal needed only five minutes of the second half to complete the turnaround.
In the 50th minute, Christos Tzolis delivered a dangerous low ball into the Chelsea area.
Havertz cleverly allowed the ball to run through him, creating space for Martin Ødegaard, who had timed his run perfectly.
The Arsenal captain found himself with time inside the penalty area and calmly finished past Martínez to put the hosts 2–1 ahead.
It was Ødegaard’s second Premier League goal of the campaign and another important contribution from the Arsenal skipper as the champions continued their impressive opening run.
Chelsea Fight Until the End
Chelsea refused to surrender despite falling behind.
Xabi Alonso turned to his bench as the visitors attempted to regain control, while Cole Palmer, João Pedro and substitute Estêvão Willian looked for openings.
The Blues came particularly close late in the game when Estêvão unleashed a powerful effort in the 89th minute, only for Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya to produce an excellent save to preserve the lead.
Pedro Neto had also struck the post shortly before half-time as Chelsea showed they were capable of hurting the champions on the counterattack.
But Arsenal’s defence held firm during the closing stages.
Arsenal Maintain Perfect Record
The victory means Arsenal have now won all three of their Premier League matches this season.
They are one of only two teams yet to drop a point, alongside Manchester City, who also have nine points from three matches.
The result also extended Arsenal’s remarkable unbeaten run against Chelsea to 12 consecutive matches across all competitions.
For Chelsea, meanwhile, the defeat ended their perfect start under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Despite the setback, Chelsea showed enough attacking quality to suggest they could remain serious contenders this season, particularly after spending heavily during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal Send Early Title Warning
For Mikel Arteta, the victory represents more than three points.
Arsenal were tested by one of the Premier League’s most ambitious sides, conceded the opening goal almost immediately and still found a way to turn the match around.
That resilience could prove crucial in a title race that is already beginning to look like a battle between Arsenal and Manchester City.
