Manchester City have completed the signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for a British record-equalling £125 million fee.
The blockbuster transfer was officially confirmed on Tuesday, September 1, as City completed one of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window.
Fernández, 25, has signed a five-year contract with Manchester City that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
The £125 million fee puts Fernández alongside Liverpool striker Alexander Isak as the joint-most expensive signing in British football history, matching the fee Liverpool paid Newcastle United for Isak last summer.
City Make Another Statement Signing
The arrival of Fernández represents another huge statement of intent from Manchester City as the club continues its major squad rebuild under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Fernández reunites with Maresca, who previously worked with him at Chelsea, and City are hoping the Argentine’s technical ability, energy and experience can help them mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title.
The midfielder enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign at Chelsea, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists, while also playing a key role for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.
His international pedigree is equally impressive. Fernández was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning team and their 2024 Copa América triumph. He also featured in the 2026 World Cup final, where Argentina finished runners-up to Spain.
From Chelsea Record Signing to City Blockbuster
Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 in a deal worth around £107 million, making him one of the most expensive players in football at the time.
After three-and-a-half seasons at Stamford Bridge, he now leaves Chelsea having made a major impact, winning the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with the Blues.
His departure also brings a remarkable financial turnaround for Chelsea, who are understood to have made around £18 million in profit on the original transfer fee.
Manchester City’s £450m Summer Spending Spree
Fernández is only the latest piece of a remarkable Manchester City spending spree.
The Premier League giants have invested heavily in rebuilding their squad following Pep Guardiola’s departure, with Elliot Anderson reportedly costing £116 million and Iliman Ndiaye arriving from Everton for around £65 million.
Reuters reports that City were the Premier League’s biggest spenders during the summer window, committing approximately £458 million to new players.
The wider Premier League transfer market also broke records, with clubs spending approximately £3.46 billion during the summer window.
Four of the 11 most expensive transfers in Premier League history were completed during this window, underlining just how extraordinary the spending has become.
A New Era at the Etihad
For City, Fernández’s arrival is about more than simply adding another big-name midfielder.
The Argentine is expected to become a central figure in Maresca’s new-look Manchester City side as the club attempts to reclaim the Premier League crown after finishing second to Arsenal last season.
His ability to dictate play from midfield, contribute goals and operate in advanced positions could provide City with another attacking dimension.
And with Fernández now officially wearing the sky-blue shirt, Manchester City have delivered one of the biggest transfer statements of the summer.
