Precious Doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Ondo State have initiated a 14-day warning strike due to the non-payment of seven months’ salaries to new members.
Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) staged a protest on the hospital premises on Tuesday, expressing their determination to halt activities at the government-owned medical facility until their demands are addressed.
The President of UNIMEDTH ARD,Dr. John Matthew, expressed frustration during the protest, stating, “We demand full payment of the arrears of salaries owed to our members and payment of February 2024 palliative to our House Officers.”
He further emphasized the need for the management to fulfill their obligations, including the payment of February hazard allowances and addressing the severe shortage of clinical manpower within the institution.
“Our members work every day. There are no staff due to Japa syndrome,” Dr. Matthew highlighted.
The Nigeria Medical Association’s state chapter has also urged the government to tackle the shortage of resident doctors in state-owned hospitals, underscoring the importance of adequate medical staffing for effective healthcare delivery.
