A former senior Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) official has been arrested after the Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) allegedly discovered more than $40 million worth of gold bars hidden inside his Virginia home.
The suspect, identified as David Rush, was taken into custody following a federal investigation into alleged theft of government property and fraud-related offences. According to court documents, investigators uncovered approximately 303 gold bars valued at over $40 million, alongside nearly $2 million in cash and dozens of luxury watches during a raid on his residence.
Authorities said the investigation began after internal discrepancies were reportedly detected during a CIA audit involving requests for foreign currency and gold bars allegedly made for “work-related expenses.” The matter was later referred to the FBI for criminal investigation.
Fraud Allegations Surface
Federal investigators also accused Rush of allegedly falsifying parts of his academic and military background over several years.
According to reports, he allegedly claimed qualifications and military experience that investigators later found to be unverified, including claims of being a Navy pilot and holding university degrees that could not be confirmed.
He is currently facing charges related to theft of public money and fraudulent claims tied to military leave payments. Additional investigations into the gold stash and financial activities are ongoing.
Massive Reactions Online
The shocking case has triggered widespread reactions online, with many social media users describing the discovery as one of the most bizarre corruption scandals involving a former intelligence official in recent years.
U.S. authorities have not yet disclosed the full scope of the alleged operation, while the CIA and FBI say investigations are continuing.
