Chelsea have suffered a damaging Premier League defeat after Brentford produced a stunning second-half performance to beat the Blues 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night.
The first half ended goalless, but Brentford came out after the break with far greater purpose and eventually broke Chelsea’s resistance in the 61st minute.
Jaidon Anthony put the hosts ahead after Brentford created danger from a corner, giving Chelsea a major defensive problem to solve.
Chelsea pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Brentford remained dangerous on the counter. Their persistence paid off again in the 83rd minute when Igor Thiago doubled the advantage.
The Bees then completed the demolition deep into stoppage time. Substitute Fabio Carvalho found the net in the 90+4th minute to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
The result is particularly significant because it marked Brentford’s first home league victory over Chelsea since 1938, ending an extraordinary wait against their West London neighbours.
Chelsea’s defeat also raises further questions about their defensive consistency. The Blues had 53.2 per cent possession but managed only four shots compared with Brentford’s seven, with both teams registering two shots on target.
For Brentford, the victory represents another statement of their ability to trouble one of London’s biggest clubs. For Chelsea, it is a night to forget after failing to turn possession into meaningful attacking production.
