Oyo State Police report the arrest of three suspected armed robbers and recovery of a locally made pistol after an alleged robbery near Sumal Junction in Ibadan.
Police say three suspects were arrested after a reported robbery near Sumal Junction Roundabout in Ibadan on October 8.

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspected armed robbers following a reported robbery around Sumal Junction Roundabout in Ibadan, recovering a locally made pistol, a live cartridge and a motorcycle.

The arrests followed a distress call received by the Divisional Police Officer of Oluyole Division at about 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026, reporting that armed men were allegedly attacking members of the public and dispossessing them of their belongings.

According to a statement issued by the police command and reported by several Nigerian news outlets on Sunday, October 11, a patrol team was immediately deployed to the area. The officers reportedly confronted the suspects and arrested three men.

Police Identify Three Suspects

The police identified the arrested suspects as:

  • Sunday Obasola, 29
  • Kayode Bamikole, 28
  • Durodoye Ayobami, 23

The command said officers recovered a black TVS motorcycle with registration number AKN 808 QF, one cut-to-size locally fabricated pistol and one live cartridge during the operation.

The recovered items have reportedly been secured as exhibits to support the ongoing investigation.

Police Allege Tricycle Driver and Passengers Were Robbed

The police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects had allegedly robbed a tricycle driver and two passengers. The command also alleged that other people were injured during the suspects’ operations.

The reported confessions form part of the police investigation. The allegations have not been established by a court, and the suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence under the law.

The police have not publicly detailed the identities or medical conditions of those reportedly injured in the incident in the reports reviewed.

Case Transferred to VCRU in Eleyele

The three suspects remain in police custody, while the case has been transferred to the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Eleyele, Ibadan, for further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property through prompt responses to distress calls, intelligence-led policing and sustained operations against criminal activity.

The command also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or criminal activities to the relevant security authorities.

Police Urge Residents to Report Suspicious Activity

The arrests highlight the role that timely reports from residents can play in alerting police to suspected crimes. However, the investigation must still establish the full circumstances of the incident and the individual roles, if any, of each suspect.

Residents who witness a crime or face an immediate security threat should contact the police or the appropriate emergency response service.

As investigations continue, further official updates may clarify the allegations and whether additional evidence or charges will follow.

WeGoTalk will update this report if the police release further verified information about the investigation.
