Nigerian troops have reported major counter-terrorism operations in Adamawa State, killing 16 terrorists and recovering several weapons.
However, the operations also came at a cost. Three soldiers died while troops repelled coordinated attacks on military positions in the state.
The Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, carried out the operations between September 30 and October 1, 2026, across its Sector 4 Area of Operations.
What Happened in Adamawa?
According to the military, troops first conducted an ambush against a terrorist enclave in the Boima general area of Gombi Local Government Area.
The operation resulted in the reported neutralisation of 16 terrorists.
After the encounter, troops searched the area and recovered:
- Three AK-47 rifles
- Two pump-action rifles
- One Dane gun
- Six AK-47 magazines
- A belt of pump-action cartridges
The military said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to disrupt terrorist activities across the North-East.
Airstrike Hits Terrorist Gathering
The military also reported a separate air operation in the early hours of October 1.
According to the Joint Task Force, an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platform detected about 16 terrorists alongside 15 motorcycles under a tree canopy in Sector 4.
The military said it detected the group at about 4:40 a.m. and carried out a precision air interdiction at approximately 5:30 a.m.
A subsequent battle-damage assessment, according to the military, confirmed a direct hit on the target.
The military added that some surviving terrorists scattered from the area.
Three Soldiers Killed in Separate Attacks
The operation was not without losses for the Nigerian military.
Troops also repelled coordinated attacks against 226 Battalion in Garkida and 232 Battalion in Garaha.
According to the military, troops responded with firepower that forced the attackers to withdraw.
However, three soldiers were killed during the fighting.
The military said wounded personnel were evacuated and were receiving medical treatment in stable condition.
Why the 19 Deaths Need Context
Reports describing the incident as “19 killed” combine casualties from different engagements.
The military’s account does not describe one single clash in which 19 people died.
Instead, the reported figures comprise:
16 terrorists reportedly neutralised in the Boima operation + 3 soldiers killed during separate attacks on military positions = 19 reported deaths.
This distinction matters because the operations involved several locations and different military actions.
What Weapons Did the Troops Recover?
The military reported recovering several firearms and ammunition following the Boima operation.
The haul included three AK-47 rifles, two pump-action rifles, one Dane gun, six AK-47 magazines and a belt of pump-action cartridges.
The recovery could limit the firepower available to the terrorist group involved, although the military has not provided an independent assessment of the wider impact of the operation.
What Happens Next?
The Joint Task Force said follow-up exploitation and mop-up operations were still ongoing across the affected areas.
The Theatre Command said it was strengthening coordination between ground and air components as part of efforts to restrict terrorist freedom of movement in the North-East.
The military also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies.
What We Know — and What We Don’t
At this stage, the reported facts come primarily from the Nigerian military’s account of the operations.
What we know:
- The operations took place between September 30 and October 1.
- They covered parts of Adamawa’s Sector 4 operational area.
- The military reported 16 terrorists neutralised in the Boima area.
- Troops recovered several firearms and ammunition.
- The military reported a separate precision airstrike.
- Troops repelled attacks on military positions in Garkida and Garaha.
- Three soldiers were killed.
- Wounded military personnel were receiving treatment.
- Mop-up operations were continuing.
What remains unclear:
The military has not publicly provided the identities of the three soldiers who died or detailed casualty figures from the attacks on the military positions.
There is also no independently verified figure in the reports reviewed for the number of terrorists killed in the separate airstrike.
The Bigger Security Picture
The latest operations underline the continuing security challenge in parts of Nigeria’s North-East.
The reported ground ambush, air operation and attacks on military positions show that troops are dealing with terrorist activity across multiple locations.
For residents in affected communities, the immediate concern remains whether sustained military operations can prevent terrorist groups from regrouping and protect communities, farmers and businesses from further attacks.
For now, the military says its follow-up operations are continuing.
