Chelsea have entered a new era after Clearlake Capital completed a major ownership transition that gives the investment firm full control of the Premier League club, while Todd Boehly steps down as chairman.
Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that affiliates of Clearlake Capital will acquire the ownership interests held by Boehly and fellow co-owner Mark Walter.
The transaction makes Clearlake the club’s controlling owner, while Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss remains a stakeholder in the ownership group.
BOEHLY LEAVES CHAIRMAN’S ROLE
Boehly, who became one of the public faces of Chelsea’s ownership after the 2022 takeover, will leave his position as chairman.
In a statement released by the club, Boehly described it as an honour to have served as Chelsea chairman and expressed confidence in the club’s future under Clearlake’s leadership.
The ownership transition marks a significant change from the structure established when Clearlake, Boehly, Walter and Wyss combined to purchase Chelsea in 2022.
CLEarlake NOW HAS FULL CONTROL
Before the latest transaction, Clearlake held a 61.5% majority stake, while Boehly, Walter and Wyss each held minority interests.
The latest agreement sees Clearlake acquire Boehly and Walter’s interests, giving the investment group full control of the club.
However, Chelsea have stressed that supporters should not expect an immediate overhaul of the club’s daily operations.
NO CHANGE TO DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS
Despite the ownership change, Chelsea say there will be no changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy.
Clearlake has also indicated that it intends to continue investing in the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development.
That means manager Xabi Alonso and the football operation are expected to continue under the existing structure.
A NEW CHAPTER AT STAMFORD BRIDGE
The development brings an end to Boehly’s formal role as Chelsea chairman, just over four years after the ownership group acquired the club.
Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League and are preparing for their next league fixture against Brentford.
The club now moves forward under Clearlake’s full control, with the ownership group promising continuity in its broader strategy.
A new chapter has begun at Stamford Bridge — and this time, Clearlake is firmly in charge.
