Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits in Katsina State.
The former military spokesperson was abducted alongside his wife in late May while travelling through the Matazu axis of Katsina State. His death was confirmed by the Katsina State Government, which described the incident as a tragic loss to both the state and the nation.
According to the state government, the retired general died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while still in captivity. Officials said efforts by security agencies and the government to secure his release unfortunately ended in tragedy.

Major General Abubakar was a respected figure in the Nigerian military and previously served as Director of Defence Information, where he played a key role in military communications and public affairs. The Defence Headquarters described his passing as a painful loss and praised his years of dedicated service to the country.

While the nation mourns the late general, concerns remain over the fate of his wife, who was kidnapped alongside him and is reportedly still being held by the abductors. Security agencies are continuing rescue efforts aimed at securing her freedom.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed shock over the retired officer’s death, extending condolences to his family and the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The President reaffirmed the government’s stance against negotiating with criminal groups and pledged continued efforts to combat insecurity.
