Fresh violence has rocked Benue State following the killing of the state Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ardo Muhammad, who was ambushed and shot dead by unidentified gunmen shortly after attending a peace meeting in Ohinmini Local Government Area.
The deadly attack, which also claimed the life of Yakubu Isah, occurred on Friday at Okudu community in Otukpo Local Government Area, throwing residents into fear and heightening security concerns across the area.
Attacked While Returning From Peace Talks
According to available information, Muhammad had earlier participated in a peace meeting organised by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohinmini Local Government Area. The meeting brought together Fulani leaders and representatives of the Ayunne community in a bid to address lingering security challenges and improve relations between the groups.
Sources said the meeting ended on a positive note, with participants expressing optimism that it would help ease tensions in the area.
However, tragedy struck as Muhammad and his companion were travelling home when armed assailants reportedly intercepted their vehicle and opened fire, killing both men on the spot.
Family, Officials Confirm Incident
Muhammad’s eldest son confirmed the incident, saying his father was murdered while returning from the peace dialogue.
The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, also verified the attack, describing the killing as a disturbing development capable of escalating tensions within the community.
He appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that security agencies had been mobilised to restore order and track down those responsible.
Similarly, the Chairman of Ohinmini Local Government Area, Adole Gabriel, disclosed that the slain MACBAN leader had actively participated in the peace meeting aimed at preventing further violence in the Ayunne community.
Gabriel described the attack as unfortunate, noting that it came just hours after stakeholders had reached a peaceful understanding during the dialogue.
Police Launch Investigation
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, who said the command had commenced a full-scale investigation into the killings.
Police authorities assured residents that efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the gunmen behind the attack.
Fresh Security Concerns in Benue
The latest killing has once again drawn attention to the fragile security situation in parts of Benue State, where recurring clashes, armed attacks, and communal violence have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.
Residents and community leaders have called on security agencies to intensify surveillance and ensure those responsible for the attack are brought to justice, warning that the incident could undermine ongoing peace efforts if swift action is not taken.
