Three persons were killed and two others injured after a dispute reportedly linked to ₦200 escalated into a violent clash in the Ikola area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, also resulted in the destruction of property, with some buildings reportedly set ablaze before security operatives restored order in the community. (PM News Nigeria)
Preliminary information released by the Lagos State Police Command indicated that the violence began after suspected area boys allegedly stopped a commercial tricycle operator and demanded ₦200 from him.
The tricycle rider reportedly refused to pay the money, following which his vehicle was allegedly seized by the group.
The situation later escalated after the rider returned with other persons to confront those involved, triggering a violent clash between the two groups. (PM News Nigeria)
Police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said three persons lost their lives during the confrontation, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
She added that some buildings were set ablaze in the course of the violence.
The deceased and injured victims were subsequently taken to the Military Hospital in Yaba for necessary procedures and medical attention. (PM News Nigeria)
Police, Army Move In as Violence Spreads
Following the outbreak of violence, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, visited the affected area alongside the Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 9 Brigade, Brigadier-General Afolabi Owolabi.
The security chiefs assessed the situation and coordinated efforts to restore calm.
Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Task Force, Tactical Squad, Police Mobile Force, Eko Strike Force and the Violent Crime Response Unit were deployed to the area to prevent further attacks and maintain law and order. (Punch Newspapers)
The police said normalcy had been restored, although security personnel remained on ground for continued monitoring.
Investigation Underway
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that an investigation had commenced and vowed that anyone found responsible for the violence would face the full weight of the law.
Residents were also urged to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence that could assist the investigation.
The incident has again drawn attention to the alarming speed with which minor disputes can degenerate into deadly violence, particularly in densely populated communities where tensions involving transport operators, street gangs and other groups can quickly spiral out of control.
