Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the Lagos State House of Assembly, describing it as a significant milestone and the final full-year budget of his administration.
City Business News reports that the proposed ₦4.237 trillion Budget of Shared Prosperity is designed to deepen access to essential services, complete critical infrastructure, and ensure wider distribution of economic opportunities across the State.
Presenting the budget, the Governor said the estimates reflect the journey Lagos has travelled and the future it continues to build for its residents. With a projected revenue of ₦3.994 trillion, the proposal carries a manageable financing gap of ₦243.33 billion, which the administration says it will handle responsibly.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos’ steady progress in 2025 across education, healthcare, housing, transportation, technology, environment, and public safety forms the backbone of the 2026 plan. The budget is structured around four strategic pillars aligned with the State’s evolved THEMES+ agenda.
- A Human-Centred Lagos
The administration is prioritising expanded access to quality education, improved healthcare services, and strengthened social protection systems. Key allocations include:
Education: ₦249.13 billion
Health: ₦338.45 billion
Social Protection: ₦70.02 billion - Modern, Integrated Infrastructure
Sanwo-Olu said the State’s focus in 2026 is to not only build but better connect infrastructure across roads, rail, waterways, power, and digital systems.
Economic Affairs (transport, works and infrastructure): ₦1.372 trillion - A Thriving, Competitive Economy
The budget channels more support into MSMEs, startups, agribusiness, manufacturing, tourism and the creative sectors.
Environment: ₦235.96 billion
Recreation, Culture and Tourism: ₦54.682 billion - Effective Governance
Strengthening public institutions, enhancing security, and deepening e-governance remain top priorities.
General Public Services: ₦847.47 billion
Public Order and Safety: ₦147.04 billion
Of the total budget, ₦2.185 trillion is earmarked for capital expenditure, while ₦2.052 trillion will fund recurrent obligations and day-to-day operations of government.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his commitment to keeping Lagos secure, functional, and increasingly prosperous as he enters the final full year of his tenure. He expressed gratitude to the Lagos State House of Assembly, the civil service, party leadership, and the people of Lagos for their continued support.
