Martin Ødegaard produced a moment of brilliance as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Napoli in their Champions League clash at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Arsenal captain struck in the 75th minute with a superb finish from outside the box, rewarding the Gunners for a dominant performance and giving Mikel Arteta’s side a winning start to their European campaign.
Ødegaard Breaks Napoli’s Resistance

Kevin De Bruyne came close to an equaliser in the closing stages, but his attempt across goal failed to find a teammate as Arsenal held on for a valuable clean sheet and three points.
Arteta Praises Arsenal’s Mentality
Despite the narrow scoreline, Arteta was delighted with the performance.
The Arsenal boss described the victory as fully deserved and praised his players for their attitude, courage and quality, while admitting that the team should have scored more goals.
The result was particularly impressive given the difficult circumstances surrounding Arsenal’s trip to Naples, with flight disruption affecting their preparations before the match.
Yet once the game began, Arsenal remained composed and imposed their style on a difficult opponent and a hostile atmosphere.
Napoli Suffer Another Setback
For Napoli and manager Massimiliano Allegri, the defeat adds to a worrying run of results.
The Italian side have now suffered three consecutive defeats, increasing the pressure on Allegri despite the quality available in his squad.
Former Manchester City star De Bruyne, now playing for Napoli, endured a frustrating evening and was unable to produce the decisive contribution the hosts needed.
Napoli improved towards the end but ultimately could not find a way past David Raya and the Arsenal defence.
Arsenal Make European Statement
The victory gives Arsenal an important boost at the beginning of their Champions League campaign.
After reaching last season’s final, the Gunners have once again been tipped among Europe’s leading contenders, and their disciplined performance in Naples demonstrated why.
Ødegaard’s decisive moment ultimately separated the two sides, but Arsenal’s overall control, defensive resilience and ability to create chances will encourage Arteta.
The challenge now is to become more clinical.
For Ødegaard, however, another outstanding performance from the captain could hardly have come at a better time.
