The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has reaffirmed the indispensable role of air power in Nigeria’s security architecture, declaring it “central to the successes recorded across multiple theatres.”
He made the remark during the decoration ceremony for newly promoted Air Commodores and Air Vice Marshals held at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, Abuja.
General Musa stated that the elevation of the officers reflects the nation’s trust in their strategic leadership at a time of heightened security demands. He noted that their new ranks come with expanded responsibilities that are vital to safeguarding the country and advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration.
Highlighting the significance of the Air Vice Marshal rank, he explained that it requires a broader strategic outlook, deeper discipline, and unwavering professionalism. He described the newly promoted officers as custodians of the values that define the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), adding that their leadership philosophies will shape the effectiveness of air operations and inspire future commanders.
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, also congratulated the officers, emphasising that their promotion is a testament to years of competence, character, and proven readiness to translate strategic guidance into operational outcomes—particularly in a security environment dominated by terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and emerging technological threats.
General Musa commended the NAF for its decisive contributions to joint operations, citing precision engagements and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that have strengthened national response efforts. He called for deeper inter-Service synergy, noting that air power delivers maximum effect when integrated with Army, Navy, and security agency operations.
He further paid tribute to fallen heroes and acknowledged the sacrifices of military families, describing them as the unseen backbone of the nation’s defence.
Both the Minister and the CAS reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the Armed Forces and urged the newly promoted officers to lead with humility, clarity of purpose, and steadfast dedication to national security.
